Our Wonderful Father Chris

I think we all know the great Father Chris! Well... I finally got him to do an interview, so, let's get this blog started.

Father Chris has been assigned to Rome for four years to teach and mentor young priests about knowing and serving the vulnerable.  So, first I asked Father how he became such a good servant priest. He immediately said that his family had laid 'a good foundation'. He also insisted that God put it in his heart to 'serve'. I imagine that the good foundation Father had was the reason that he was looking for God's touch.

For me, a strong  example of Father's openness to serving is Brother Andre's. He remembered he was having coffee with Mike Fitzgerald when Mike presented the idea. Within two sips, Father was IN. Father Chris' response was based on his honest beliefs. He told me, "People with IDD are the lights of the world." I'll take that as a compliment!  He also said, "We are each what God made us, so we've got to be kind to each other." These are strong words that can benefit us all. I'm so glad that Brother Andre's came to be, it has completely changed my life!

Since Rome is going to be Father's new home, I asked him to name a few things he'll miss. Family and friends were first and second. Did I mention that the family that created Father's 'good foundation' is huge? Father has several nieces and nephews with whom he loves spending time. Every week, the family gathers at his Mom's house for dinner. I bet they have a ton of fun, lots of chatter, and plenty of food! One of Father Chris' very favorite things is giving his nieces and nephews the Sacraments. I have no doubt that these are special moments for him and for them.

Another part of Father's Pittsburgh life that he'll miss are his priests friends and, specifically - going fishing with them. I asked Father if one of his good friends, Father Joe, also went fishing and, if so, had they ever gotten into trouble. Father said, "Yes, he did go and NEVER." I find that last part difficult to believe.

Father Chris told me that going to Rome was bittersweet. (He had been there as a Seminarian, - proving somethings really do come full circle.) In fact, he told me that he'd like to borrow Skipper for snuggles. My answer was that Skipper and I will have to discuss it. Maybe I could draw up a contract. But Father's also excited for a new adventure. He's happy about having his meals cooked for him, and he loves the idea of going out for pizza and pasta. I'll bet the food is delicious, maybe he can mail me some. I will miss him, but I know he will do great things.

Father Chris has been an integral part of this wonderful mission and we are very grateful. We are so proud of you, Father, we love you!!
